Patrick Garvin began his stint with J&P Cycles at the start of 2008 after doing some installs for us at Daytona and Sturgis for two years. Currently Patrick splits his time between the ecommerce team and purchasing, finding new and exciting products for our website and catalog. When he’s not at his desk, he’s zigzagging across the country with J&P’s event crew.
Patrick has an obsession with going fast on just about anything, a trait he shares with his 6-year-old son Race. You can usually find both of them wrenching in the garage or ripping through the fields on dirt bikes. Emma, his beautiful wife of 7-plus years, puts up with his antics and keeps his head screwed on, because he certainly wouldn’t be able to find it without her.
Q: What compelled you to get so involved with motorcycles?
A: I worked with a guy (Randy) who grew up around bikes and owned quite a few — including a Panhead that was his everyday rider. I would watch him pull up on that Pan every day until I finally bought a ’74 ironhead. I was hooked. A few HD’s later, I won a horsepower shootout at AMI in Daytona with a bike that my dad and I built. My appetite for horsepower continued to grow and I moved on to sportbikes where I spent a large amount of my time drag racing in “no bar” classes. And that opened my eyes to nitrous and turbos and the sickness grew from there.
Q: What did you do prior to coming to work for J&P?
A: I owned and operated a speed shop where I did a lot of dyno/tuning work. We did a lot of engine building, nitrous and turbo applications with sportbikes and HD’s.
Q: What exactly do you do at J&P?
A: I work in our purchasing and ecommerce departments. In purchasing I’m responsible for certain sections of the catalog and bringing new parts and vendors to both our catalog and website. In ecommerce, I write for our blog, help provide content for our e-newsletter and work with other members of the ecomm team on developing brand pages and increase the overall usability of www.JPCycles.com for our customers. I also travel quite a bit, doing events, Sturgis, Daytona, Laughlin as well as a number of regional events.
Q: What do you currently ride?
A: Right now, I’m riding a 2004 ZX-10R with a whole laundry list of modifications. Among my favorites are probably the nitrous kit and the adjustable rear sets.
Q: What do you like most about your job with J&P Cycles?
A: I like finding new parts and making them available to our customers. There’s an awful lot of good stuff out there that people still don’t know about.
Q: What is your dream bike?
A: Any thing that is fast enough to hurt me. I’m not a brand loyal — if it’s fast and fun, I’ll ride it.
Q: What are you currently reading?
A: The Art of War by Sun Tzu and every motorcycle publication available.
