Josh Schmit is a problem solver and he’s been resolving customer issues here at J&P Cycles for the past seven years. Heck, he’s got answers for questions posed by other J&P techs. All this equipment knowledge comes from years of working on bikes. And Josh will be the first to tell you that squatting down in front of a bike with a wrench is the best education you can get in this industry.
Meet Josh Schmit:
J&P Cycles: What got you interested in motorcycles?
JS: It started for me the first time I actually tore apart a lawnmower engine at 9 years old and my older brother helped me get it back together. At that same time he was given a 1973 Honda MT 125 that turned over, but did not run. He got it going and my riding and passion began that first time on the bike.
J&P: What is your actual job at J&P Cycles?
JS: Currently I work in the technical department with a focus on handling and resolving issues that may arise with customers that may not be able to be handled by the individual rep or technician.
J&P: What did you do before coming to work here?
JS: I was doing a lot of things. To begin with, I was a small engine mechanic in a local New Holland dealership that also handled Polaris. So, I worked on a lot of quads, snowmobiles and jet skis as well as a motorcycle project here and there. I then went to a position in a call center on the phone. From there I transitioned into automobile sales also doing the Can-Am (Bombardier at the time) for a short time. I did some CNC work prior to coming to J&P Cycles 7 years ago.
J&P: What do you like most about your job here at J&P Cycles?
JS: I get to learn from the best techs in the industry on a daily basis. I have references and a lot of material to read and gain more knowledge. And let’s face it, I get to sit and talk about bikes all day! What can be better?!
J&P: What do you currently ride?
JS: I have a lot of projects in the garage, to be honest. My favorite is a 1978 Kawasaki KZ 650 that hopefully will become a café racer by next summer. I also have a 1982 Suzuki GS 650 that I am finishing up for a daily rider and to loan to the father-in-law (gotta keep him happy). I also have a 1972 Harley Davidson SXT 125 (Aermacchi) that is sitting on the back burner, I but hope to have it ready in a year or two. The peach of my collection is a 1980 Honda NC50 Express that I pulled out of a buddy’s barn after 18 years, it has been a fun toy for my 12-year-old daughter (and me, too) since I got that up and running. Lastly I have a minibike and a go-cart that are fun toys for a big kid like me.
J&P: What is your dream bike?
JS: That is tough as I have my eye on a few. I would like to have a little from each world, to be honest with the Dyna FatBob being first on the list and a close second would be the BMW 1000RR with all the bells and whistles. And a good Honda CRF250X would get me back to my trail-riding roots.
J&P: What would be your best tip to our customers talking on the tech line?
JS: That’s an easy one: Gather up all the information you can on your bike as well as all the details you can for your particular issue before you call us. Armed with all that info helps us get you your parts much quicker, and we can be extremely accurate with fitment. That gets you back on the road ASAP.
