If your idea of fun is watching motorcycles rocket up the side of a near-vertical hill in hopes of getting over the top, then you’ve got to show up in Anamosa, Iowa (J&P Cycles’ hometown) on June 6. Even as we speak, members of the Midwest Hillclimbers are getting their bikes ready for the 61st Annual Anamosa Motorcycle Hill Climb and Swap Meet in Anamosa.

Riders from all over Iowa and surrounding states will attempt to conquer one of the area’s most difficult hills. We promise plenty of thrills and even more spills, because there just aren’t that many riders who can successfully take this hill and claim it as their own. What’s frustrating to most who attempt this monster mini-mountain is the fact that the really skilled riders make it look so darned easy. But just try this: During a lull in the competition, walk over to the base of the hill where the riders take off and start climbing on foot. Almost immediately you’ll find yourself crawling on hands and knees in order to make progress.

Now that’s a steep hill in anybody’s book!

The classes are as follows:

  • 600 Novice: 360cc – 650cc
  • 600 Expert: 360cc – 650cc
  • Four Stroke: 360cc – 650cc (four-stroke only)
  • 700 Novice: 651cc – 750cc
  • 700 Expert: 651cc – 750cc
  • Open class: 751cc – up

And just to make it more fun — no chains and no paddles!

In addition to the hill runs, the event features a large swap meet. Vendors offer everything from used motorcycle parts and new accessories to leather goods and formerly owned motorcycles. There are some excellent food and drink vendors at this event, so come hungry and thirsty (adult beverages are also available).

Admission is $10, and children 12 and under get in free. The swap meet opens at 10 a.m. (10277 Shaw Road, a mile south of Anamosa, Iowa, on Hwy. 151). The hill climb begins at noon. Rain date is June 20. For more information, visit www.anamosahillclimb.com.
