Fall Riding, Enjoying the Weather

Here in eastern Iowa, the weather is turning cooler, bringing us into one of my favorite times of the year to ride a motorcycle. The weather is not desperately hot and is great for a relaxing ride. It’s not desperately cold, so you don’t have to bundle up like Nanook of the North to enjoy. Other parts of the country may have already passed the peak color turning season (you northern brothers and sisters), and you southern brethren may still have this to look forward to. Anyway, seeing the leaves change color is great and everyone should treat themselves to a “leaf run.”

Fortunately we are close to the Mississippi River Valley and the front wheel of my Indian will be heading in that direction this weekend. I expect breathtaking views as we travel along the river bluffs. I imagine my Missus and I will get some of the great Manny’s pizza in Savannah for lunch. Other points of interest in Savannah include the “Ironhorse Social Club,” and the infamous “Poopy’s” just outside of town.

Further south in LeClaire, is where the original store shown in American Pickers is located. Maybe we’ll catch a glimpse of Danielle, Frank or Mike. I’m quite amazed a couple guys can go junking on the back roads of America and make money at it, much less a popular TV show. Who’ed a thunk?

We will likely head back west once we reach Davenport – home of the greatest antique motorcycle swap meet around Labor Day. I don’t know of any event scheduled this weekend that would attract our attention. But who knows?

One of my greatest joys of the year is this little unorganized run, and I strongly urge you to start a tradition like it. Point the front wheel to the winds, and get out there and ride. That’s what motorcycling is all about.  Til next time, keep your knees in the breeze!
