Scott here again, it’s the beginning of November…daylight savings time just reverted, it’s going from cool to downright cold and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Another thing November brings us is Veterans Day. In the past, I’ve blogged about the origins of this holiday. In posts, I have highlighted how I joined the service and became a veteran myself. Today I’m going to talk about what this day means to me, and why.
So I don’t cover the same ground I have in the past, I’ll just briefly say that joining the service was the single most important, and life shaping event that I have ever done. Every … Continue Reading

J&P Cycles Event and Special Projects Supervisor Patrick Garvin talks with J&P Cycles staff members regarding their motorcycle-related resolutions for 2014.
The holiday season is a great time of year at J&P Cycles – one we all enjoy. There are different festivities we take part in as a group: the holiday party, departmental gift exchanges and employee lunches. It’s hard to not have the holiday spirit.
As we reflect on 2013, the Open House Rally immediately comes to mind. More than 30,000 of you visited us during our 34th annual event in June. With 2014 being J&P’s 35th year in business, we’re upping the ante for the 2014 Open House Rally. Drum roll please… we’re turning this event into a 3-day rally. That’s right, 3 days! Friday, June 27 to Sunday, … Continue Reading

Wow, what a wake-up call. It’s the time old adage – you don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone, or in my case, almost gone. No lie, earlier this month, my life virtually passed before my eyes.
In early November while on my post at work, I was having difficulty breathing. A couple of the supervisors were concerned and asked if I wanted to go home. Being the hardhead I am, I refused to leave and finished my shift. I had been a little more tired than usual, and with the next day off, I figured I’d recover and be fine.
The following day, my wife came home and … Continue Reading
Well the holidays are here, and it’s that time of the year to start thinking about gifts, cards, and spending time with family and friends. Now while that may sound alright, in my opinion, we have lost the whole meaning of the holiday. To me the holidays have become a time of immense pressure and stress. Walking into my local big-box retailer starts to become a real adventure this time of the year. It’s always packed with more people than I care to be around – all wandering the aisles aimlessly trying to find those perfect gifts. Every year, it seems like the stores are trying to push you into … Continue Reading
Here it is, time for what seems to be my annual essay on Veterans Day. Having been a blogger since the inception of the J&P Cycles Blog, a pattern has emerged regarding national holidays with any military connection. Give it to Scott, he’s a vet, he can do it. As a United States Marine Corps veteran, I’m honored to be given the challenge to write about these holidays. I’ve just re-read the past offerings that have been posted, so I don’t repeat my ramblings. Today, I’m going to examine the reasons I chose to enter military service.
As a young man, I came from a family whose father and numerous … Continue Reading
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer, but why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894.
Labor unions celebrated the first Labor days in the United States, although there’s some speculation as to exactly who came up with the idea. Most historians credit Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, with the original idea of a day … Continue Reading
It sure is great to be an American and have the freedom to ride motorcycles and attend great events like this past weekend’s Open House Rally. There are many places in our world under tyranny and people don’t have the freedom attend an event like the J&P Cycles rally. Heck, in those places, a rally like ours could never happen.
On our country’s birthday, we should celebrate the ideals our founding fathers put forth in establishing a fledgling country. I’m pleased and proud to be an American and am glad for the freedoms that I have been granted. … Continue Reading
