Harley Unveils New V-Twin Liquid Cooled Engine Models

Earlier this month Mother Harley released its new additions to the HD product line. The new Harley-Davidson Street 750 and 500 feature the new Revolution X V-Twin liquid cooled engines. They are entry level bikes with a lower stance and are built to be nimble and easy to ride. These bikes were released to the public at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy earlier this month.

Not sure how people will accept this new adventure for Harley. First introducing a liquid cooled platform and now introducing smaller “urban” version liquid cooled bikes is quite a change. Styling of the bikes is meant to be in your face and fresh, but may remind some of the Honda Shadows of the 80’s.

No matter what your opinion is Harley is definitely looking to shake-up the motorcycle world in the future. It will be interesting to see if the HD loyal welcome the new bikes into the fold, or shun them like the plague. Only time will tell…

I owned a ’80 fxb for years loved it but not very reliable after a number after many years no matterwhat I did to it short of rebiulding it and don’t tell me because it was manufactured by AMF. If it wasn’t for them they would be like Indian was. every year when I go to Sturgis all I see is Harleys on the road side. Yes I do ride a Honda, and I love it, ’05 VTX 1800f it’s reliable and just as good as any Harley, 2 wheels are 2 wheels enjoy the ride no matter what you ride. Maybe some day I will own another Harley but for now I will stick with my Honda-Davidson.

Back in the early seventies when I was in the Army & all the Jap bike makers were making jokes about the V-Twin, I heard a joke that went, “Harley-Davidson made a good motorcycle in 1952…& still made a good motorcycle for 1952.” This joke had a grain of truth to it but after the Evo’s came out I think that all changed & H-D can hang with any of them. Now I tell people, “If you want a bike to ride like a Honda, buy a Harley.” I say let them do what they want to encourage a market but don’t mess with the old basics…Start a new line if they want but quit compromising to try to be something else.

I’ve been waiting for these bikes to arrive….I can hardly wait to get one…..I went from the Heritage to the Low Ryder to a Buell, and at my age I want the smaller bike…..Yeah to Harley……

So, curiosity requires me to ask you: why didn’t you look at a Honda or a Triumph or a Suzuki or Yamaha?

I wish I would’ve known about these new HDs earlier, I just bought a 750 Honda Cruiser :(

500 street!!?? It’s like Ferrari building a Corolla. HD’s after the seventies might be technically better but the bikes soul has been murdered and stolen by yuppies and money vultures. (Look! this innertube has the harley davidson logo on its box, it is a legendary. innertube and therefor we charge you five times more.)

I have owned 6 motorcycles in my lifetime, all big Harley Davidson V-Twins (FLHTC, FLHR).

Every one of them was a piece of junk.

I don’t see Harley building anything else. After all, they been making the same engineering mistakes for 110 years.

You’ve never owned a Harley and are full of crap. I’ve owned 4 and the only problem I’ve had was a relay ($17) go bad on a 12 year old sportster. Jap bike riders always talk sh*t.

Are these bikes going to be sold in the U.S? Or just overseas?

Yes they will be available in the USA.

Be warned though, all the manufacturing is being done in India.

Everything I’ve read is saying that the non-US units will be produced in India. The North American units will be produced in the Kansas City factory.

My first bike was a 1942 Harley 45, ie 750 cc. I have great memories of that bike, and wish HD good luck with this ‘new’ venture.

I say “Well Done, HD!” Welcome to the 21st Century. I have loved HD since I was a wee lad with my Dad and uncles riding and restoring old H-D’s and Indians. But let’s face facts here, to the youngsters and the old-timers….the metric’s have had the edge on technology, comfort, reliability and ease (and COST) of maintenance for YEARS now – 30 years at least, if you go back to the introduction of the ’83 Honda Shadow VT750C, Honda’s first V-Twin. It’s time that the MoCo kept up. Keep up, Keep Ahead, or get left behind. The introduction of these new street cruisers will lure many people (men or women) away from rice rockets and into the cruiser market. These are nice bikes. The European models will be built in India and the North American models will be built in the USA. I love HD’s, just don’t LOVE the cost of maintaining one. My ’98 Honda Shadow VT1100 ACE Tourer costs me under $20 for an oil change, needs minimal maintenance and runs like a raped ape. And, it was built in Marysville, OH. I ride an American-Made Cruiser/Touring bike. This bike will go 100K miles easily without needing major motor work. How many HD bikes will do that? So to some of you old-timers, stop slamming the metric bikes. We’re all on 2-wheels, so who cares? Enjoy the road – enjoy the ride – enjoy freedom! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

They done a fine job copying the japanese lets hope they run as good as well as one lol , I well never let go of any of my iron heads 1962 , 68 , 72 , 73 , and the stroker the 1974 . Shift on the right brake on the left , however i did buy a new road star in 2000 when the greedy dealers tried to screw me like a bi34h ! ended up making a hot rod out of it 106 at the rear wheel , it’s a keeper , Thanks to Patrick racing !

If you want to re release something that people want to buy put out 103 dyna sports or a new fxr.

The market wants a better performing street bob and superglide. Thinner, faster and better handling. Dual disk front brakes, fairings, narrow forks and for god sakes a slimmer and more compact set of hand controls.

Water cooled 500 and 750…… Give me a break. And quit saying “urban”.

I hear that! The word “urban” makes me think of dilapidated buildings, gang-bangers, rap “music”, and stinking diesel exhaust being spewed from slow moving busses and construction vehicles. There is nothing good about anything “urban”.

with these new bikes maybe more women will ride i think its a good thing my sportster is to big and heavy for my daughter for a first bike and mine is a old 1972 old iron head the new sportsters are lighter but not light enough so i see these bikes as a good thing i wish harley would go back to the dirt bike market even though the old dirt bikes werent that good that was amf’s fault but i still miss them bikes you can find an old one but then the hunt for parts is on so harley bring on the new bikes and some more new dirt bikes or us old guys will be bobing the 750 and 500 into dirt bikes i used to own a 1972×90 fun bike for a young kid

I guess the rear head on these will now cool properly in street traffic where a lot of people ride around. This is more weight so it is going to be tried on a smaller bike for now and set the game up to comply with upcoming EPA regs on emissions. BMW has done the same with the water boxer but just not on a smaller bike yet but the environmentalists have a lot to do with this too. Forget being macho guys, the thundering herd will become scoots with electic motors soon and those are already being market tested as well from what I read. Watch how you vote!!

Looks like Harley likes Italy better. Would of been nice of Harley to introduce them here first. Kinda makes you feel like a 2nd class citizen don’t it ??

Although, yes, with the jump in scooters & smaller bikes for the younger crowd, a good approach may pay off. But compare to a café racer? Instead of a Honda nighthawk look, or generic look, maybe styling it really after a café racer or small bobber but with the suspension, a look that draws attention, would be better. But it looks generic!

Kinda like the old Italian “Harley-Davidsons” in the 70′s. Remember the Americi 250, 350 cc?

My 02 TC 88 is too new for my tastes.

At age 80 with over 60 years riding experience I am ready for a lighter bike with the H-D name. I presently own a bagger, a Sportster and a dual sport. I want to ride at least another 10 years but need something easier to handle. This new 750 looks promising. I will ride one in the spring and possibly replace the bagger which is increasingly intimidating at slow speeds because of the weight.

Go, John! I like how you think…at 61 years old myself & God willing, my hope is to ride for many more years to come. I started on Harleys almost 40 years ago & got almost 14,000 miles in so far this year since getting off crutches in March.

One of the driving factors (not the only one) is the sale of Buell. With the sale of Buell, Harley did not have a model to use for Rider’s Edge courses and the existing Buells in the program are getting long in the tooth. The Sportster, although not overly heavy, sure isn’t for beginners due to being fairly top heavy (great bike just not the best for beginners). HD has known for some time it would have to find a replacement. Rider’s Edge is an important part of expanding HD’s market share.

I’ve thought for a long time that Harley needed a smaller to midsize bike to attract the commuter/college/beginner crowd. I love the “Real” Harleys (currently a Road King) but also embrace the new riders coming aboard. I remember a few years ago during a gas crunch that people were buying the 250-500cc street bikes as fast as they could find them. Kept thinking that Harley is missing out on a great market, even though the Sportster is probably the finest “street” bike ever!!!

Like we need a dose of VD ! there are to meany yuppies out here now with glowing lights around the motor we need more of the kind of people from 30 years ago !

I ride my 2005 1200R everyday to work and back……the bike is light enought to whip it around as needed, when the car and truck drivers start acting crazy, but still heavy enought to troll on the high way without any handling problems. I am now 62 years young. As I get older it is nice to know that a light bike (with harley DNA) is available! I plan on riding until I kick the bucket……also knowing that it looks like the old harley cafe style bike makes it even cooler……I hope it sells well and has enought power to make it fun!

It’s about time that Harley made entry level bikes. If new riders have to start on an import bike then they are not being drawn into a Harley dealership.
Now if the would just put the big Revolution motor in a Road Glide / Street Glide style package I would be buying a new ride!

I think this is a great idea for HD. I waited until I was 54 before I felt financially stable enough to buy an HD. We old farts are dying off. HD needed to bring a motorcycle that addresses the young professional needs for a HD. I noticed that many 20 something age riders start with a crotch rocket but by the time they reach 30 years old they start looking at cruisers.
The problem with this 30 year age market, is that 30 is usually the age of “responsibility”, where you get married, buy a house, start a family. At that time it is. financilally difficult to go and buy an HD motorcycle. But a 750 cc HD for $7,400 is a purchasable item.

Don`t kid yourself……….this has been coming for a long time, it is really about what the Federal Government and EPA is requiring Harley to build for the masses.
Harley has always been known for Large V-Twin Motorcycles. Now we have to have this rammed down our throats as well, from our our Government and the European Community. I saw this coming. What`s next? Electric Italian Harley Mopeds? Give me and the Real Men (Bikers) a break.

Amen brother. I’ll keep my ’79 XLS I’ve had for 27 years. Yeah, I’m one of those old farts, probably never will go for a “Honda-Davidson”.

Don’t worry if you want freedom, air cooled, and make it your own, go custom. Its no longer about brand or tradition its about attitude and your idea of what motorcycling means too you, and that’s one area the feds can’t touch. Build it leaner, meaner, cheaper

I think its great that Harley has decided that the entry level bikes the Japs have been making for years will not be theirs alone from here on out. The imports have never been shy about selling flat out copy-cat reproduction bikes that claim American heritage…im glad that people that are intimidated by bigger bikes, or more expensive bikes have an American choice in that category…
–I have to say that this reminds me of an article I read recently about the huge resistance that the Harley faithful had when the Knucklehead was introduced. Harley built Flatheads for quite a while to appease the faithful. Now who seeks out what models?

I think this is great and long overdue! Even at 650 lbs my Superglide T-Sport is far from a lightweight. It took me about 6,000 miles to get used to the weight when I first got it, but I love it. I just hope that the insurance companies give these new bikes a break because here in Canada we pay a lot more just because it says Harley Davidson on the tank.

I have been riding Harleys from the FRS and FXD series for years. All of them were good, some were better than others. The FXDX was my favorite of the lot. Now I’m on an FXDC, it is a really good all around motorcycle. That being said at 70+ years of age I am not as strong as I used to be, my reflexes are slower and vision is an issue. I want to keep riding for another lustrum or so on the freeways and byways of So Ca but at 700 lbs the FXDC can get intimidating at times. I tried a Triumph Bonnie SE but we didn’t get along very well. I traded it in less than 6 months and got a chrome pearl yellow FXDC, she looks great and rides good. The new 750 Street at less than 500 lbs may be just the ticket to keep my knees in the breeze awhile longer

I fell your pain brother. I’m 72, been riding 58 years. My ’79 XLS beats me to death, but it is a MOTORCYCLE and I will never sell it. I did buy a 2009 883 Low with 2600 miles on it. Actually I stole it for the price I paid.

I know, I know its a “girls bike” , but its well mannered and I can ride it all day. When it starts to bore me, I light up the XLS.

I’ve been expecting this for years. The 800 pound elephants are running their course. Now it will be time, again, for motorcycles as motorcycles should be. I’ve NEVER ridden a motorcycle I couldn’t pick up by myself, (that’s in over FIFTY years). “Good Morning” world!

I don’T know I’m 6′ at 160 and I ride an FLHTCU. Don’t know If I can pick it up I havn’t let it go down. I ride.

Well, Harley hasn’t carried Buells for years, they needed a bike for their Rider’s Edge training courses, and many of the folks who take Rider’s Edge want a bike similar to what they learned to ride on. So, smart move on Harley’s part. Liquid cooling also helps keep the bikes quieter (no need for more open exhausts to pull out the heat), overcoming a major complaint that many non-riders have about Harleys.

That said, I plan to buy a Road King before they start adding liquid cooling to it!

Well I bought one and I think its great! I get so tired of people slamming Harley,Yet everyone wants to own one and every company want to build one like a Harley… My god it only water cooled Heads. When you get stuck in traffic, this might help. I have only had the fans kick on once and that was after I shut it off. You know, when your engine really gets warm…………

HD should have had liquid cooling many years ago. Try riding an air cooled motor out here in AZ when its really hot. If you have a cat conv cooker; you will roast your leg and get burn scars. I had to have all that removed just so I could stop at stoplight without burning myself.

Well now… Harley Davidson FINALLY realized that there are people who want to ride, but might be intimidated by a 700 pound, $17,000 (or more) bagger. I’ve been wishing for years that H-D would create an entry-level bike so that beginning riders wouldn’t have to start out on imported machines. I just hope that the price of these new bikes is also aimed for younger folks. The bikes will be a sales flop if they aren’t priced to compete with the entry-level from Honda, Yamaha, etc.

The only thing I don’t like about the new “Street” bikes are those gawdawful cast aluminum wheels. Traditional chrome, laced wheels would look so much better. But then again, I’m sure they will be either an (expensive) option, or available as accessories from H-D or the aftermarket.

Ae the bikes actually made here in America, or is this another Aermacchi-type venture, with the bikes produced in another country? No mention of that info in the video.

Son, Harley has made the Sportster since 1957, I’ve been riding one about as long. “Good Morning”!

Looks like my 1983 Honda shadow 750—-maybe Honda will sue harley in the same way harley sued Honda back in the 80s becuase of the engine sound the honda’s made—–Besides—-why step down from an 800 to a 750 unless it’s for the hippies/hipsters and womens market

I think this is an excellent venture for the MoCo. They have not had an entry level cruiser since the Ameracchi days. (Those were not true Harleys, and the Buell Blast was not a cruiser). I cannot wait to see these on the street, nor can I wait to ride one… Yes, they are different – So was the VRSC family when it debuted. This definitely levels a challenge at the pacific rim companies with their entry level cruisers that have owned the market segment for decades. Bravo to Milwaukee for this!

I will ride one when they are available. It looks like the engine displacement is the only real difference, so I don’t understand the 500 value. Then again, I wish I had never sold my Buell Blast – helluva a commuter bike! It truly did suck for 2 up after about 15 minutes though.
