The Gift – A Sense of Freedom
April 3, 2013 | By: Joan Krenning
Editor’s Note: Joan Krenning purchased her first motorcycle, a brand new Harley-Davidson Softail Custom in 1986. In February of this year she launched on a 36-month motorcycle tour of America that she calls, the Glory US-A Freedom Ride. Riding a 2013 Street Glide wrapped in graphics of the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence and quotes from Abraham Lincoln about equality, her purpose is three-fold: to promote the purchase of all made in American products, to passionately defend our Bill of Rights and the rights of all Americans and to inspire hope.
Joan is the founder and CEO of DesignWraps Brands, a product line and brand she has built with partner, Elizabeth Woltemath. She says had it not been for the love affair she had with her Harley, DesignWraps would not have taken place. She describes herself as a woman of courage, sourced by faith. When she’s not riding (which isn’t very often), she enjoys watching NFL football, reading, gardening, her family and playing pool.
The laugh of the crowd and the music began to dim as we walked out of the Golden Lion Cafe in Flagler Beach, located on the ocean, 20 miles north Daytona Beach. Rain was falling lightly and the air was fresh and clear.
St Patrick’s Day is traditionally a time for the party crowds and this one was no different.
Daytona Bike Week had been so busy. It was my debut of the Freedom Ride and I had spent the last five days meeting with my sponsors, answering questions and my favorite of all – meeting people. Everyone seemed to want to know who I was, why I was riding and why my sweet Street Glide was wrapped in the graphics of the Constitution.
It was Joe Sparrow from the J&P tent who, after installing my new Kuryakyn Phase 7 LED Headlight, invited me out to dinner with the marketing crew from J&P Cycles. I was very excited to ride with these guys. I felt it was a test sent from the powers that be.
There are always tests and there always will be. Tests, I believe, are designed to up our game.
Jason led us out to Flagler Beach through roads that were, at times, a challenge. I was so intent on riding the curves that I totally missed the wild hogs and deer I was later told we passed.
Spending time with Lowell, Tim, Patrick, Jason and Joe was great.
Until we walked out of the Golden Lion Cafe.
I asked the guys to go on ahead, as I was riding in a different direction. But I felt that wasn’t the only reason. The pull to walk across the street and wander out onto the beach was strong.
As I walked out on the sand, watching the waves as they rolled in I felt a moment of emptiness inside.
But only for a moment…as right behind that feeling of emptiness came a sense of calm.
It was in the still silence as I listened to the soft rush of the waves that the first feeling of freedom washed over me.
The magic of being out there – just me, God and the world.
Have I told you that I feel like the luckiest girl in the world?
To be on a 36 month motorcycle tour of America – just me, my Street Glide and God.
Sitting in the silence allowed me to hear.
Sitting in the silence allowed me to feel.
Sitting in silence allowed me to experience… that profound sense of freedom.
Life for this woman…will never be the same.
