That’s great it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane, Lenny Bruce is not afraid…. – R.E.M.
In case you missed it, the Mayan “long” calendar ended on 12/21/12, thus prophesying the end of days in some peoples’ eyes. Yes, the calendar stopped and though these ancient Mayans couldn’t foresee their own downfall at the hands of the Spanish or even develop the wheel, some people in the 21st Century placed serious stock in that theory. Did it occur to any of these people that the artisan working on the original calendar might have passed away? Maybe he was bored? Is there, at this time, a calendar in existence that goes on and on – perpetually without end? Or, are there just so many calendars in existence that don’t necessarily portend the end of days? Why do so many latch onto every doomsday scenario that comes down the pike, just to be embarrassed the next day, or better yet, claim their calculations were off, but claim we’re the idiots in the days and months leading up to the Big Sleep?
My theory points to the immensity of the human ego. We just LOVE being right. Additionally, we love being privy to something. What’s more, we love having others see us being right. Another thing that puzzles me are the “Prepper” types. I don’t mean legitimate disaster preparation, I mean the ones who take to the hills or bunkers in the hopes of being the last ones standing. The end is the end is the end – an Armageddon by any other name would burn just as bright. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe an end will come, simple logic mandates that fact. All belief sets, spiritual and secular, agree with that. Beyond that, the only thing one cannot be sure of is WHEN it will arrive.
So if you’re reading this and were one of the subscribers to the Mayan calendar stuff – sorry, hope you weren’t too disappointed because you were wrong. Perhaps you’ll find insight and enlightenment from a more serious source than some dark corner of the Web you find on page 26 of your Google search. Better get that mortgage or rent payment sent off – it’s still due. To the rest of you, it kind of felt like Y2K déjà vu didn’t it? But, what the heck – go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief. Enjoy the holiday season with friends and loved ones. Get some baking done. You know – live your life. Perhaps they foresaw the end of Twinkies. If so, well played.
Oh, and calendars are still available from J&P Cycles. We have plenty of styles and themes to choose from, but they all have one thing in common, they only run through 2013. Don’t get all freaked out.
