Chopper Live: Does Anyone Actually Watch These for the Bikes?

December 24, 2012 | By: Patrick Garvin

The second coming of Discovery Channel’s yearly popularity contest went off again and in a déjà vu moment, Paul Junior Designs came out on top. After watching both nights of this circus, I’ve had a bit of time to reflect and I’ve come to the realization that the whole thing was disingenuous on many levels.

The show had almost nothing to do with actually building motorcycles (something we’re very fond of). There was very little in the show about the fabrication involved in building any of the bikes. Instead it centered on trying to build drama around the builder’s relationships with each other.  They wasted a ton of time on some super lame “pranks” that the builders were pulling on each other that were obviously staged by the producers. Discovery has moved away from the original Biker Build Off shows that featured actual footage of people building bikes and the struggles in fabrication to straight up reality TV. I don’t care if the bike builders feel all warm and fuzzy about each other. What’s with all the drama about the deadline?  Since when do bikers care about rules much less someone else’s timeline? If you have ever tried to go on a ride with one or more bikers you would realize that most dudes on bikes don’t own a watch. In general, I think bike shows are pointless, you bust your ass to build something then drag it to an event where other people decide whether or not THEY like it? Who cares? All that should matter is whether or not the person behind the handle bars likes it, period.

The bikes

I’ll start with the winner of this shindig. PJD rolled out yet another theme bike – he even talked about the “themes” they toyed with using and ultimately what “theme” they decided to go with. I have an idea, how about a motorcycle theme? What’s wrong with just building a bitchin motorcycle? That being said, I do think this year’s entry was better than last years, still too gimmicky for my taste, but that’s the kind of the world we live in (a world where what something looks like is more important than function and substance).

Bike 1

Second place was the Gas Monkey guys. Say what you want about them doing a restoration versus a ground up build, that bike was pretty awesome. It was more of an “every man” style bike, something a lot of us could have built in our own garages with some ingenuity and a J&P Cycles catalog. And, they rode it there. Huge props to those guys for riding to the show. The previous biker build offs always mandated each builder to ride a certain distance to the judging point which required some functionality to be in the design of the bikes, it was nice to see the guys carry on that tradition.

Bike 2

Senior’s team did really well. That frame was dope! I have seen a lot of custom built frames, but that was new to me. It was kind of a monocoque frame, but with the tanks built into the sides, truly one of a kind. You could tell they had probably been planning this since the last show. Although they didn’t necessarily build this by hand so-to-speak, they stuck to what they do well and used the technology they had to build a very cool bike. The only thing that could have put people off about the bike was the front end, it did make the bike look a bit like a Confederate Hellcat, which is also a cool bike. Senior seemed to be more of a spectator in the build and Jim Quinn seemed to the driving force behind the design. You could even make the argument that none of the other builders could have pulled that bike off.

Bike 3

Jesse James was just that – Jesse James. Love him or hate him he is true to who he is and doesn’t seem to care what people think. That’s an admirable trait to most bikers, but it doesn’t go far in winning popularity contests. His bike was a far cry from most things he has built in the past. The fact that the small fairing on the front looked a bit like a Buell fairing took away from what was probably the nicest bike there. Unfortunately, Discovery decided to make a bigger deal about the deadline he missed than the actual problems he faced building the bike, so you didn’t get a chance to see the fab work that went into the machine. There was a hand fabricated tank and tail section along with a trick oil tank that were barley referenced. Not to mention the frame they showed Jesse using in the beginning of the show was a far cry from what actually ended up being used. The motor mounts that were machined out of one piece and integrated into the cam cover and inner primary looked like nothing I had ever seen before, yet none of these were touched on we just cut to Jesse on a cell phone…’cmon Discovery.

Bike 4

To me this show turned into a microcosm of our society, a society where functionality and hard work are far from important. A society where what you look like is more important than the skills you bring to the table. You see it in everything around us; cars with $2,000 wheels and $3,000 stereos that barely run, so called singers who dance around and look oh so pretty, but sound like a raccoon in a garbage can as soon as they open their mouth. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I’ll take bands that are made in garages not on TV shows, primer colored V8s that lay rubber marks 100 yards over candy coated imports, and air cooled, ground poundin’ motorcycles blasting across the great plains over shiny trailer queens. You can keep your sizzle I’ll take the steak.

How true. The old biker shows are now just drama shows. What a bunch of crap. The original Biker Build Off series is gone. Good buy to Paul and Paul Sr. never liked them or their stuff. Yes Jesse is who he is a bit wacked but he don’t care. I was all over the Gas Monkey guys, my kind of ride not another Orange County gimmick bike. Paul Sr. never does any wrenching he just watches others and $100,000 machines do all the work. Oh the good old days.

The show was a little heavy on the drama. Discovery was marketing this for the casual observer, not bikers. I thought that all the bikes were good, unlike the last build-off. Jr’s bike was ok, but heavy on theme. Of course he’s a designer, not a builder. Gas Monkey did an awesome old school bike. All that was missing was an awesome paint job. I’m not into the sports-bikes, but Sr. and Jesse did build interesting ones. Both were unexpected. I was disappointed with Jesse. Too much bitching and I felt that he could have built a much better bike. If he didn’t care, he shouldn’t have done it. Sr. had a very interesting bike, but I felt he would have done better with an old school build. He knows how to do them and he’s good at it. I think that if they do it again, I would like to see choppers, not sports or theme, and I would like to see it opened up to more builders. Billy Lane would be a great addition when he gets out. Also, they need to get a show host that actually knows something about choppers. Maybe someone from one of the chopper mags. The last thing is the judging should be done by builders.

i couldnt agree more. im chucking the tv and going for a long ride on my bagger.

I thought the show was “chopper build off ” so that eliminates Jesse’s and seniors as they were sport bike knock offs. So we have Juniors glory rod-nice but not me, and GMG’s chopper. Yep a real chopper- just like the days of old, take an old bike and ‘chop’ it into yours. Well done guys, real men don’t have a problem with the paint.
Rock on guys.

Yes it was a good article, yes the Discovery shows are all soap operas and NON reality. If you are interested in building bikes or looking at bikes folks build at home, pick up a copy of The Horse BC and take your son to the garage and show him how to weld or cut threads or hammer something out of a hunk of tin. I can tell you from experience that it will relieve the stress and frustration induced by all the gimmick TV B.S.

Plain and simple, this show became about people who watch TV,not build, ride, or love motorcycles.

I could not agree more I stopped watching American Chopper after the first season. Over priced trailer queens is all they build I would rather ride a stock HD than have one of those bitch bikes in my garage. Looking at the pics Jesse and Gas Monkey had cool bikes.

All I can say is Indian Larry must of been turning in his grave…

Yep, I agree that this ‘show’ was more about the show than the building. All the teams produced bikes that could be ridden. However, as the writer stated “There was very little in the show about the fabrication involved in building any of the bikes. Instead it centered on trying to build drama around the builder’s relationships with each other.”

That’s Hollywood, Drama and Crap over-shadow true reality. Just like a magician, they misdirect our attention so the ‘trick’ can be performed. If they brought back the ‘Build-Off’ series, I would watch that.

Me? I saw the cards on the table that night and just went into my garage, turned on some Rock & Roll and wrenched on my bike. Kill your TV, ride your bike and leave the Drama on the TV.

Live, Love, Ride.

Respect,
Edgeman

Only real bike was Gas Monkey Garage bike..Jesse James a real mess…some kind of grotesque cafe racer or something..Juniors bike a converted Schwinn bicycle…real comedy to a 50 year greaseball biker,(me)!

Discovery Channel has got it all wrong. When a show has the name “American Chopper” (or whatever they’re calling it these days), one would expect it to be about motorcycles, not a bunch of whiny guys who do nothing but complain about each other and act like junior-high school girls whenever they’re on camera. There are a few other shows like that, one called “Graveyard Cars”, where the premise is to re-construct totally roached-out Mopar muscle cars, but very little camera time is spent on the actual repair of the cars. Just more of the same bitchy school-girl whining from “men” who could be much more productive if they would just shut up and pick up a wrench.

As far as the bikes pictured above, none of them really do much for me. The best chopper I’ve ever seen was pictured in “Easyriders” magazine, around the fall of 1977. It was a black, hard-tail Panhead, with a 20-over springer front-end and peanut gas tank. Very minimalistic and bare-bones, but the profile of the bike was absolutely perfect. I still think of that bike when I hear the word “chopper”.

And – whatever happened to Billy Lane? I heard he was doing time for a traffic fatality, but is he back in the game yet? To me, he was the most talented of all of the modern chopper builders.

Fucking eh I get tired it takes me two years or more to work full time and build a bike in my basement and I bring it out and I don’t care what anyone thinks cause I did it !!!!

Why watch this crap in the first place? Ya know these shows are of and by posers. I’ve been wrenching my old shovel for 32 years and it is a “real” custom. By that i mean it fits me and what I like – piss on anyone else. I change things to what i like, not someone else’s idea of cool. In the early days i may a lot of my own parts, probably not as refined as what the cool dudes are using today but functional. Now it is a little easier as the parts sources, read JP, has a lot more to choose from. Still though i find it necessary to build some things myself. If you love to ride then build what you like.

I feel the same about yer’ write-up! Groing up with a father/biker from the fifties, I certainly can relate. Things sure have changed and our society is loaded with lambs and sheep…

Patrick made some good points in his article. I have been involved in building and repairing 2 wheels and 4 wheels for most of my life. I really miss the old biker buildoff shows when guys like Indian Larry (miss him) built a bike and then actually rode the thing somewhere. I even got some great idea’s for bikes I was building at the time from the show. I stopped watching these shows years ago because it really is not reality. The crazy money that came into the industry starting about 20 years ago has thankfully, been going away. Those bikes to buy starting at $50000 too! At one point we had like 5 custom bike shops within 15 miles of my shop(Harley Dealer closed too). What a joke. All gone now. Real guys who ride don’t need a $50,000 chopper to acutally ride! You don’t need big money or crazy expensive equipment to build a great bike. You need imagination, a little money, dedication and some time! I admit I tried to watch the show the first night, couldn’t make it though. A lot of these guys are really talented (Jesse for one) but all the other trash was to much for me to take. Go back to showing guys building and then riding their bikes somewhere please!

I’D WATCH AS DISCOVERY CHANNEL WOULD TRY TO FILM THE FINAL PART OF A OCC BUILD.THE TEST RIDE WAS A JOKE. BREAK DOWN AFTER BREAK DOWN. TAKE AFTER TAKE.THIS WOULD HAPPEN MORE THEN ONCE.WHERE WAS I? I WAS VISITING FRIENDS ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE ORIGINAL OCC SHOP IN NEWBURG.17k.THESE BIKES WOULD NEVER MAKE A LACONIA,DAYTONA OR EVEN A LAKE GEORGE RUN.MY POINT, BRING BACK BIKERBUILDOFF AS A SERIES WITH VERY LITTLE DRAMA. OCC WAS GOOD BEFORE DISCOVERY,WHEN PAUL SR. WOULD COME TO MARONEY’S AND HANG OUT AND BULLS%$# WITH THE BROS DURING A FIREFIGHTERS RAFFEL.OR 9/11 RUN.

Well said!
I have stopped watching most of the build shows because I don’t care for the drama, I want to get ideas about how different guys design and fabricate.

ha pat
ty ty ty! . it is about time someone put the dis to tha disco channel. the build-off was wow 10 years ago when we lumps got to see the kings of bikes doing, what we all want to have the time and life to do. then those disco boys come along with their jerry springer crap and now we are supposed to just take it. well sorry jesse i missed the show and your sporty is bitchen so, f-them go get out the water cooled nuck and burn up the west texas roads.

redial
avmc

check out the salinas boys, youll see gas monkeys bike

I agree that the show has turned into a reality bullsh*t show. I was rootin for the Gas Monkey’s cause Chrome don’t getcha home, if ya can’t ride it what good is it?

Gas Monkey Garage actually built a good looking bike. I would ride it and be proud to be seen on it! I can’t say that for the other ones.

Thank God it’s over. Paul Jr. could have entered a Shriners Clown bike and still won. Most the crowd that voted never rode a bike with an engine. Mrs. Junior was the only thing worth watching!!!!!!
Biker Build Off was a great show and I would love to see another series.

I think you hit it head on. They are NOT building true riding motorcycles. I also think that the show is a joke and I would watch paint dry before that clap.

I miss the REAL biker build-off , where they show’d people actually building bikes .

With any “reality” show, its all about the ratings -yes, crap is made and hyped up to increase or sustain them. Stop watching them you’ll feel better.

Well said! Eventhough I still favor Jesse James bikes, I am tired of him constantly reminding us that he is an outlaw! The real Jesse James is an outlaw. The bike builder is a “self proclaimed outlaw.” Look up the term; Poseur!

I have been very disappointed in American Chopper over the years. It is clearly all about money and what sells. Like most of you I am really interested in motorcycles and the build. Big money tells us everything has to be turned into a soap opera, where the original reason for the show is lost. Reality television is more about non-reality to me, but it sells. How are you going to make money these days watching a real guy talk about the real stuff wrench heads are interested in. Like the motorcycle world itself, you have folks who like to look pretty while drinking coffee and talking the talk while their big dollar bike is getting serviced, and there are the folks who never get the grease out of their fingernails and couldn’t get invited to the mayor’s luncheon as if they would even want to go. So we’re all different. The uniting bond is that we love to feel the air on a nice day and smell the smells and hear and feel our little buddy underneath us. Big money will always be the same, selling emotion and non-reality to the 12 and 13 year olds who also tell us what the latest music craze is. Be yourself. I like him, but I feel sorry for Paul Sr. I think he was happier when he was struggling and building bikes. Now he just kind of seems lost in the money.

Absolutely perfect Patrick!

none of us have a machine shop just basic tools and some creativity to build a bike and what i saw grease monkey built what i would have built and rode .

I couldn’t disagree with the article more. Plenty of time was spent on the bike builds. And all the technology in the world doesn’t mean squat if the final product looks like JJ’s and Sr.’s scoots…like futuristic crotch rockets. Who the hell would want to ride one of those for more than a few miles??? Themes are Jr.’s schtick; it is what makes him unique, so why bash the guy over this? I think the voters got this one right, and yes, I will watch the next build-off no matter who is in it because I live and breath bikes and the lifestyle. It is popular to rag on this show and people feed off each others negativity, yet you all watch it…hypocrites.

I , would never own, or be seen riding anything, that those (occ) yankee almost wanna to be ,in theirown mines bike r builders. Sr. is the only one with real time riding, but his eyes are brown, He is full of ittt. Jesse needs to just build, shut up,move on . Now the Gas Monkey Garage, built ,and rode to ,and took the show. FATT HEADS THEY DON’T HAVE! It’s obvious that the Texas duo was only there for distraction… Aclassy scoot , from two classy Texans. aaaaaany one could , and would ride their scoot and look good!!! I’m also from TEXAS…

OCC/PJD are a** wads and the show made me feel embarrasment. Come on discovery! I’m even ashamed now of Jesse building some crotch rocket looking crap, thought Jesse (even though he’s an a** wad too) would remain more old school and real chopper kind of guy. Right on Gas M and RIP indian Larry! Jim/Ole/Ed/hipster are all dead on. All these rush 30 minute builds are ridiculous in the first place and the putts turn out to be some weird SPACE AGE freaking mars looking contraption. WTF!

Well written! JJ builds bikes. The others put someone elses parts together.

I J$P PARTS DISTRIBUTING MIDDLE MAN IS IN ON THE TV DRAMA

The first season of BBO was the best. After that it started going down hill. When they went from 30 days to build a bike to 10 days is when it became more about the drama than the actual build. How many times do we have to see some builder finishing 2 minutes before the midnight deadline before we start to think that something is up? Also, I don’t give a sh*t about what these builders do in their spare time. I don’t want to see them racing go carts, skateboarding, or anything else. I’d rather see them working on their bike build.

The discovery channel has always been a bunch of chopped up clips they patched together to make some kind of a story make sense of them. The biker build off was no exception to the rule. The producers should be ashamed of themselves. PJD wins again what a crock, this was there agenda starting with the 1st build off last year what’s new there my friends nothing. All the shows discovery has aired on TV are the same, a bunch of clips stitched together stick to the animal shows you dummies!

3 wear a total Disapointment. Jr’s was a joke. Grease Monkeys was a True American Winner & should have been just that by all standerds, “The Winner”..after what I’v seen them build & declaired the winner..I’ll never waist my time watching that crap again & pesonaly, I’m glad it’s over with !!

Ok, for the record. None of that nightmare of a puke pile they called a show was worth watching. PJD, wtf? that thing was a wannabe crap copy of Arlen Ness’ take on the yellow 55-57 Chevy thing he did. why not use an Indian 4 engine? numb nuts cant be one bit original if he died and came back 7 times a millionaire rich boy with no talent and no taste.
the pink thing, ok, cool, its a HD, it original parts and blah blah blah. the crap paint sucked but other than that, it was a cool beginner build bike. Still the only bike on that show. The bearded dude was cool. into building it seemed. the jerk off with the flashy hair and cool guy shirts and flash style, wow, what a hipster.
Paul sr was ok. we get it though, OCC knows how to use a cnc. enough said, well, the front end was garbage.
To the o so mighty Jessica Jaymes, That was the biggest RIP OFF in history. Hello, we have Buell, Roland Sands, and a dozen other names Id rather not type. Screw a time limit, that was a sh*tbox on wheels. As for whomever wrote this article, you sir are a douche bag. No one says sh*t like ” that was Dope” for real? what are we 13 in cow uh porn ya? And GET OFF jessicas nuts, That dude is total bull sh*t. he’s a scum ball, a d*ck, a arogant prick. I d rather walk than ride anything with his 600 tires and bullets on gas tank and all that other lame ass bling bs he “builds”. FTF, FTW, FJ&P Cycles. If J&P supports a writer like this and sell the junk they sell, id really rather they take me off this mailing list.

Yeah!….Mr Garvin nailed it, How about a (motorcycle) theme again. And I agree with one comment about some of us being slow learners.

OK, my friends breathe. No way was this about building bikes. Got that? It was about advertising sales for the loooooong breaks in between show “content”. This was as contrived as it could get. I DVR’d it out of curiosity to blow past the commercials. They played and re-played the same scenes and dialogue over and over as filler. If you took any of this, even partly serious then you were suckered. The entertainment community has discovered that we are a target audience with money. They don’t care about insulting anyone’s intelligence. They think and act like we, the biking community are just a bunch of rubes. Remember the advertisers and take it out on them. Thanks J&P for pointing this out. It needed to be said.

I agree with Trike Lady, I really didnt like any of the bikes. It’s sad when the best bike of the bunch was Pink lol….. As far as Jessie being the better builder. Yeah I’m sure he is by a long shot, but I wouldnt vote for that A-hole. Besides, it really wasn’t a true chopper build show anyway, it was a reality disfunctional family show, so it was more fun to me to watch the A-hole who didnt care about winning stomp around like a crybaby when he didnt win…..

I didn’t even know this show was still on until I stopped by my brother in laws and he was watching it. I haven’t watched a lot of these shows in a long time. To much drama in my opinion. I like watching stuff being built not arguing over piddly things or who’s doing this or that. I agree with Patrick. I’m more into muscle cars and hot rods myself but stuff should drove not trailered unless it’s broke down.

i was so dissapointed in jesse james.ive met and spent some time with jesse james he is a pretty cool bro. knows his stuff and is very good at what he does.but come on jesse a crotch rocket??
until that show you were the only builder that could build a bike that you could get on and ride it more than a block!!your sh*t was cool, old school, low riding badass bikes!!!you were the next indian larry for goodness sakes!!you no the old saying (dont sweat the small sh*t) get back to were you came from and do what you do best, bike building.you let the small sh*t in life bug you and you have lost your passion.gas monkey guys,PROP’S you did a real bike, should of put your love into it,your style.good looking shovel .but ive seen many like it!!!good work.as for the JR & SR thing i have no respect for (theme) bikes seems like they are profiting from other peoples misery i:e -911 bike, fire bike,.been on these bikes for 50 years done forgot more about them than most of these builders no.i feel cheated!kind of like axle rose starting a killer old school rock band then going gay,WTF boogie fieldon il usa

As far as i’m concerned GMG had the best (real) chopper. But I really admire Jesse J. for his fab and mechanical abilities. I’m glad this whole CHOPPER craze is over. And all the shows on TV. All the RUB’s (rich urban bikers) of the world can move onto some other new craze. I ride almost every day of the week. It was 17 degree’s on the way to work this morning. Real bikers ride year around. I quit going to the local bike runs because I get real pissed when some BIKER would ask me if my 37 knuck, 51 pan or 74 shovel is a HARLEY!!!!!!!!!! Or want to know why i don’t have a electric start!!!! Or why didn’t I chrome this or that… Or they can’t ride because they have to take their scout in for it’s 5K service (4 years after they bought it). My daily ride is a 93 Electra Glide Sport. Built from a basket case, like all my other bikes. I’m glad we have J&P. For those of use that really do our own wrenching. Thank You J&P. I try to support the Indies in the area but sadly most are gone. Thanks for the great article. If your going to own it, RIDE IT.

You have to wonder how the voting was supposed to be fair. You could text or twitter. 97% of Sr’s fans do neither, 75% of Gas Monkey Garage do neither. Then they started the voting before any of the finished bikes were shown. The voting should be done by BIKERS, and only those who are on-site.

Ya the chopper show sucked.pjd showed up with another themed chopper. But a chopper. Gas monkey original chopper any one would want. Paul sr. & Jesse chopper build off not street bike build off ya they were very technical. But far from choppers.

Like told people before it was over, Jr was gonna win because he is the so call mistreated cry baby and Gas Monkey is the new show that Discovery hopes to be around for a while so they wanted to give them a plug to boost up their rating to help the Discovery Chanel not necessarily the Gas Monkey guys. The American Chopper was already on the way out. And Jesse is just Jesse and he will keep showing up because he always draws people in to see what he’s going to do next.

Well close to a real bike was the Monkeys” bike” Jr again went to far & dad well another what is it & WHY” & for jese’s bike well lets see HMMM?? Ok first HD race bike??? LOL! jesse should ether put more chome on his bikes or”"” start making mirrors so when he talk “s him self to people he can injoy looking at him self even more! Nobody know what goes on when cameras are of & those bikes (not just jesse) land up braking & other problems & yes even Jesse James bikes! When jesse said only enginers matter to him good to know! but selling his twain crap with his name on it made him alot $$ did thoses people matter then? LOL!Sounded like some one who just lost a election >>47% dont count’<< LOL!

I agree with your thoughts,I like to see workmenship ,like the old buildoffs. But living in the same town with honey boo boo, its what makes TV.Not knocking them ,because they are actually doing good for unfortunate people. But when it comes to bike building I like the process part and not all the fake drama.

I did not even realize it was on. I was either working on my bike or riding it. Too many freaks & not enough circuses (bumper sticker on I-75 recently seen)…

Watched a few shows a long time ago, tried it again and they dropped a bike of the lift not once but twice and still no tie downs. I agree this is all crap! I have been building bikes for 45 years.

Sorry that last link was misspelled:

You can still get to the site by clicking the first link.

There is also a Hot Rod shown on the site that runs on a electro magnetized 1/4 mile dragstrip. You can see the wheels are split with metal that grips the track via electro magnetization

Anyway you must click on the “Picture Gallery” to see these.

Visit http://kirisutospachyderm.yolasite.com and click on the picture gallery at the top of the page.

Again I think the Bullcycle shown on this site could have won if built. Especially if it had the SHO or Countach engine.

I beleve in riding not trailer qweens if you can’t ride it junk it only pu**ys and yuppys these a**holes have given bikers a bad name with there full leather outfits and fullface helmets I ride steeltoe boots jeans t shirt half shell and ride the bell out of my bike it wasn’t a badly but it did what I wanted. Just traded it for a vw trike and I plan to do the same with her ride the everlovin shut out of her and by the way I drive semi trucks all over this great country witch gives me places to go on my time off so if you ride ride put some miles on them wheels if not sell it and get four wheels.

Or when considering the Teutuls, I think of another Schwarzenegger line “It’s not a tooma!”

Jesse was the only real biker in the comp. And it seemed like Jesse & the bearded guy from GMG were the only two guys that did any real work on their bikes.

I was pulling for PJD, just to beat his dumb ass dad twice, but since the show aired, I think the GMG bike is the only bike that wasn’t an over done joke, it’s an honest, clean, ride-able machine that makes the others look like they belong in some fricken cartoon!

I always wondered how the bikes from Kirisutos Pachyderm would do if built.

You can see them on the e bay listing for Kirisutos Pachyderm, or by visiting

http://kirisutospachyderm.yolasite.com

One of the bikes has panels marked H20 and O3.

This because the bike exhausts Water and Ozone.

Yea, the bike exhausts OZONE like the same stuff in the Ozone layer

It is supposed to be futuristic where no gas is available.

The other bike is the coolest looking, and most original Bull bike ever made. The designer wants to use either a early Ford Taurus SHO engine in it, ot a lambo Countach engine in it.

I personally think it could top any of these bikes in competition.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

Again the site is http://kirisutospachyderm.yolqasite.com

Paul jr. and sr. are just a bunch of wanna-be’s. I’ve never seen them build anything except contempt for being called a ‘bike builder’. Hell, I have a garage I built, and I BUILD my own bikes. Fabricate, paint, weld, design, all the things those punks CAN”T do. All
they do is act, and not very well, like they do something which they don’t. Never watched a show more than 5 minutes cause I couldn’t stand the soap-opera..

i`m sorry missed the show but gave up on the tuttles along time ago, even before the “BIG” split.
that just shows how a man can take the greed over family. oh well as far as the bikes are concerned what happened to the hold school choppers.

Biker build off?Paul jr. rides scooters for fun.his bikes are psudo action figure jokes.Sr i think is capable of buiding a decent bike, but his biz is so tangled up in high tech machines, no bikes come ou looking like a human being built them.jesse is a biker who builds bad bikes.gas monkey guy is a motor head and built a nice machine.occ and paul jr. are jokes

They all suck, Great article. Lets face it, its all about the $$$$. Even as cool as Jesse James is, Its still the main motivation.

The Gas Monkey guys are real bikers who built a real bike. Jesse,Jr and Sr are now just posers building crap that you wouldn’t take down the road unless it was on a trailer. Senior does come up with some great ideas though.

The OCC Clown bikes never were and never will be cool, any real biker knows this. The theme bikes are $150,000 piles of garbage that are so impractical that you can’t ride them. Anyone with a 300 mm tire should have their head examined.

Absolutely right. Every time I watch one of these reality biker shows I can’t stop quoting Schwarzenegger, from the movie Predator. But only one line: “GET TO THE CHOPPER!!!!!!!”

I watched the show and I threw my vote away.
I wasn’t very happy with any of the bikes; 2 crotch rockets, garage art and a ruined classic dresser.
I would have liked to have the faded red dresser named ‘Fred’ would have restored it to original and would have been rideable/registerable.
I gave the vote to PJD.

It’s funny that Jesse James is the only one of the bunch who built his bike and not take it out of boxes. I stopped watching those shows because anyone can build a kit bike out of a box off a shelf.

I think the whole idea is bullsh*t. Want a real biker build off? Time limit, must ride bike to competetion afterwards, and every bike must be built, that means frame, tranny, motor…now that’s a competetion Indian Larry would of gladly compete in,, oh yeah no trash talking either, what’s that all about? Get real…..

I agree, what we need is a motorcycle show!
not a personality show!

Yea they are almost not worth watching because of the drama. The other thing that makes me mad is the garage queen or showroom bike wins, any real rider loves will vote for the one ridden to the show not the trailer queen

OC: ugly bikes built by stupid people. Its “Real Housewives” with some apes hammering on metal so guys can watch it. Thats all it is, too.
them clowns don’t exist in my world.

Of course the shows are fabrications. Artificial charities, artificial build “dead-lines”, artificial social issues, what a friend of mine used to call “manufactured complexities”. (love that term). However, you still get to see the BIKES and some of the issues surrounding a build. I don’t give a rip if Jr/Senior love or hate each other but these shows at least keep bikes on TV. I’ll take it.

A big waste of time and money!! They just turned it into a big joke, and it wasn’t even funny! Maybe someday they will get their heads removed from their posterior and do some real bike builder shows again that we all enjoyed.
Th th th that’s All Folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you Patrick! It was pure Reality TV, and I HATE truly HATE reality tv. It’s mind numbing tv produced for people who don’t or can’t think for themselves. That is what’s happening to this whole country. Reality TV is taking over the air waves and pretty soon you won’t be able to view a decent TV show any longer. That’s also why there are very few good movies coming out, no imagination left out there to write, direct, or produce a decent film any longer either.

Wow you guys are slow learners! These shows have been phony from day one. yes all of them! Who ever decided that we had a “king of choppers”? The worst thing is that this crap is contagious. At a local bike show at a Harley dealership the entry form asked “how much do you have in your bike”? So now it’s all about money and the bike shows on TV have been reduced to Wrestlemania! The Tuttles were idiots to begin with and more money made them richer and bigger idiots. Jesse stupid Jesse cheated on his checkbook in Hollywood. The History channel and the Discovery channel are now crap, it’s official

I agree…. I started watching these shows for the true art of building and fabing by hand. I got really tired of all the stupid drama. JUST SHOW ME HOW TO BUILD BIKE!!!… Jesse James, has great fab-er and builder skills (has NO people skills)… PJD, great fab-er and builder skills. But does tend to take designs a little over the top. Paul Sr… needs to shut up and stay in the office & let his skilled crew do what they do best. Fast & Loud guys, took an old bike, did some really cool mods and turned that old bike into a modern sleak looking new bike.

This article nailed the exact reason why I havent watched these biker build off shows in quite sometime. Too much drama, like a soap opera with testosterone, and not enough fabrication…. LAME

Man…You and I must be related! Well said!

Build it, ride it, show it, ride it again…

There was another build off show? I thought they put that shit to rest!

I agree stick with the basics

Why chopper shows? RUB’s don’t care about choppers anymore.

Patrick,
You’ve certainly nailed the point that me and some friends were just discussing about this show and many others. The drama that is created doesn’t grab the crowd that is watching. It’s maybe created to grab a larger audience, but so much would be lost in the translation to “those” people. I appreciate your article and love my air cooled piece of Americana.

Indian Larry, why did you have to leave us?

PJD builds pretty trophy bikes – that is all I have seen from him, which is cool if that is what you like, but it is not any sort of distance rider at all. Sr’s bike was cool looking as well as ingenious engineering. Jesse’s bike, sorry – missed deadline = out of competition. I do, however admire him staying true to the bike he wanted to build and not cutting corners in the fabrication of one hell of a sweet machine. Gas Monkeys – for a “CHOPPER” build – these guys nailed it, and topped it off by Riding their bike to the show. This is a true Chopper build in the vibe of its origins. I do wish Discovery would have focused more on the actual fabrication challenges of the bikes and less on the soap opera drama and pranks. I set DVR so i could fast forward through most of the show and watch the fabrication and fit-up segments.

If there is another one – how about a few basic ground rules:
1.) Minimum 100 mile range of on-board fuel. 2.) bike must be ridden by single rider at least 250 miles in single outing on a register-able Motorcycle (2 or 3 wheel vehicle) – mild to moderate day ride for most of us. 3.) How about having bikers and those who ride vote on the best bike instead of general populous who have minimal knowledge of what they are looking at – other than a “pretty bike”. Do a preliminary set of shows with reveal at an actual biker gathering (Daytona or Sturgis) with attendance only voting.

Gas Monkey guys were great. The Tuttles are entertaining but not for the bikes they build. Funny thing about Jesse is he says he builds bikes he likes and doesn’t care what people say. But when he said a lot of people complained in the first Build Off that he did what he does, nothing new, he went and built something totally different. So, do you care what people say or not. Jesse is a LA whiner. I would have been the only one on stage to say “Disqualify him!” Rules are rules, don’t compete if you can’t hang…

When the TV is on I’m usually out riding! Isn’t that what a biker does? Ride?

TV sucks! But we still pay over a hundred dollars (HD?) to have it.

Great article

I loved the article! I love the fact that Jesse is his own man and does his own thing! I along with tons of riders cannot afford to do all of these things to my bike but as long as I have your company to buy parts I will keep trying!!

Great write up. You took the words right out of my mouth. I knew someone was listening when I was yelling my comments at the TV screen!

It’s a popularity contest, period!

Here’s an idea, lock all four of them up in a shop with tools and materials and then see comes out with the best bike (no deadline.) Jesse James is the only one who is a true bike builder in my opinion.

As much as this build off was not entertaining, there were three good bikes that I would consider daily riders. Seniors, Jesses, and Gas Monkey.

But if you want bikes that you may like, type some key phrases into google and find some. Bookmark them and maybe follow them on Facebook or Twitter. There are way more talented builders out there than those four groups

C’mon, This is TV. what do you expect? It is meant for entertainment and it hit its Mark perfectly. Millions of People watched this show, Yes Millions. That’s why they do it. Of Course JR was going to win, it is all about Popularity because it is TV. The Discovery Channel made a Ton of money from the Biker Build off show as well as the 10 year run of American Chopper. Jesse James may be a biker but he is an ASS and had no chance to win, Sr is also an ASS and had no votes to win, the Gas Monkey guys built an awesome bike but are to new to have a big enough fan base to win. Jr’s bike was awesome and his fans voted his number one. That is TV, That is entertainment. I for one was entertained. I enjoyed it and would watch it again if they went for round three.

It always HAS been about the ‘DRAMA’ ! After 1st season, producers and public LOVED the ‘family dynamic’ and said so. OCC’s bikes have always (especially Jr.s) been ridiculous, ‘Test drive’ and park.
‘Old’ Jessie’s were good, real choppers. Gas Monkey’s was REAL, and a Harley, NOT an S&S ‘off the shelf’ copy.
LOVE to have seen all the other’s RIDDEN to Vegas ! Impossible !
Jesse screwed Sandra and himself BIG TIME.
Gas Monkey’s at least REAL, right (and ride) ON Gas Monkey !

I recorded both shows then watched the last 5 min of the second show. When I saw who won I deleted both shows without watching because I knew they were junk. I would like to win a DPD, JPD, DPJ, PJD or whatever it is so I could run over it with large piece or real American machinery. Now that would be worth watching on TV. Thank you J&P Cycles

Remember the original Biker Build-Off shows when the contestants would meet somewhere with their creations and then ride together to a local rally and have their bikes judges and voted on by the BIKERS attending the rally. I would love to see Junior and Senior try and ride their crap more that 20 miles.

R.O.M.F. It was supposed to be a bike build off, not how much money you can spend on something you can’t ride anywhere, except the trailer, and where was Pat Kennedy, or Sugar Bear, oh, building bikes.

All I Have To Say Is: Damn, I Miss Indian Larry! He Was The Real Deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Preach on, brother.

I give up watching OCC long ago, drama over bikes, and like said so many times, where you gonna ride these things. I got 120,000 mikes on my first harley (06) and I am hard at work on my second (12). I upgraded my 06 to a 103 and gave it to my son. Bikes are for riding not looking at (but its not bad when it looks good and rides well).

I quit watching a long time ago when I learned the price of these bikes. You had to be either a corporation or rich to even have one of these built.
I have $34,000 plus tied up in my trike but its nothing compared to what those babies sell for.

Oh so true. …Discovery channel needs to get back to how biker buildoff’s use to be. About the bikes & building with out all the other “BS”….

The problem is guys who watch a show knowing what it is , then bitch because its not what they think it should be, everyone knew the rules of the show , does anyone really think that any of these guys couldn’t build a bike to ride there ? Of course they could , but those weren’t the rules. The cost of these bikes , I have one built for my company almost $ 90,000. And could not be happier , from a public relation stand point would cost 6 times that amount , and not got same buzz,as for the older shows ppl didn’t want to watch or they would still be there !

I agree that no matter what, since the first “Build Off” Je=sse James was the winner.Just shows you the Discovery Channel only wants the Hype and Ratings and They ALONE decide who the winner is.I gaurantee it will come back to bite them in the ASS! and we will all be Laughing!

spot on for today’s society. If it shines it’s the schidt. Trying, now, to teach my kids (22 and 16) that hard work and owning what you can afford is the answer, not laziness and multiple loans just so you can get the newest and greatest….

Good article. All TV sucks.

F**k yea! Couldnt agree more. Ride on Brother.

Just want to say that this article kicked ass! I didn’t see the show, but I’ve seen enough of the Paul’s to agree. I quit watching OCC several years ago because it stopped being about building bikes and became all about reality-show B.S. drama! Unfortunately, our society, much like the bikes described, is all about form and no function whatsoever.anyway, keep telling it like it is-at least one person appreciates the truth!

The bike build among the ‘ boys’ has become sort of a joke to me as it has become too theatrical and scripted…But thats why we have remote controls..P.G

American Chopper has killed the biker builders Dreams
Its a show and people had bikes built for TV TIME!!! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A $150,000 bike.Built many bikes from $5,000 to $40,000 and if it can be put on the street and run for months not hours its a good chop. If there were betting in VEGAS i would have put my house up that Paul Jr would have one . People who watch and show up at there shop are not bike people just people who love drama . ITS A SOAP OPERA. Lets see now without the TV Hype if they both make it in two years as Bike Builders. If you needed TV time wouldn’t you pay $150,00 instead of a Million for your advertisement. Suce as hell would> JUST A JOKE

I couldn’t agree more! That’s why I think Gas Monkey shoulda win, they restored and UPGRADED a bitchin bike and RODE it there! Isn’t this what all of us riders/wrenchers truely dream of doing? I dislike pink bikes, I SURE WOULD rock that one though! I don’t ride a trailer ridden show piece, I ride a 2010 Street Glide I was T-boned on and we have a story. Its not what you ride, its how you got there! Enjoy the ride.
James

I am way to busy to watch motorcycle drama, I prefer to burn off some gas and rubber. These shows are just for entertainment of those not fortunate enough to live in the south where you can ride all year. I do however share your feelings about these shows.

RIGHT ON BRO!

Well I am sure glad y’all watched this BS because I sure didnt, and after reading the article and the responses I can sure tell nothing has changed, all a bunch of rich ass wanna b’s, the true builder does not have a TV show paying his bills for him, nor following him/her around when they go take a crap. I will continue to use JP Cycles as my parts outlet when they have the parts in stock, but to think that the build offs were anything other than a TV show that sucked, well stick to selling parts.. Poppa Smurf

The only thing I like in watching this show, since they started the psychotherapy-tripe is Junior’s hot wife. I’ve built a couple of dune buggies and modified a ton of motorcycles in my garage-work-shop none of which compare to all the glitter of the bikes on the show. They pleased me and a few others because I sold all of them at a profit. I’m not ready for prime time and at 77, I’m a little passed prime but PJr’s old lady is still choice!

The shows are all the same, from hoarders to restorers, to bike builders……way too much drama, way not enough getting done, way too many deadlines ! They’re all B.S. ! I’ve got enough drama in my everyday life – why in the hell would I sit down to some entertainment in the evening to see more ???
Its all made up, dad & son feuding – idiot brother…oh, and someone has to provide the comedic relief, in falls the idiot…..every show has one of them too !

Amen!!!! I did like the look of Jesse jr.’s bike and thought that both Jesse and Paul sr.’s bike were hot, I liked the gas monkey’s rebuild(all but the handle bars) but as far as the winner of the build off goes I couldn’t call it… Jesse an gas monkey put the work in… and gas monkey did the ride… which you have to appreciate (even tho it was half the distance from NY) all I know is that discovery has gotten away from the build!!!! Lets see the sweat and blood that is involved in all projects and less drama!!!!

jesse james is by far the best builder of the bunch didnt really like his bike but the work that went into the bike was crazy. the guys from gas monkey did a nice restore on that shovel it was the best in my opinion the color SUCKS , but they rode it all the way got give to them like there attitude d.g.a.f without coming off as jerks.and them other two guys w.t.f didnt know those guys were still alive .

Patrick,
Great article…the best bike American Chopper built was the one Sr and Junior built and raffled off at the end of the show! I thought for sure Gas Monkey was the winner. I think Jesse is cool and all but his atttiude sucks. Really all his does is whine about how great he is and gets no respect from anyone. Then says he doesnt care. Well if you dont care Jesse quit fu**in whining about it all the time! Anyone can do what you do if they had Discovery giving them that kind of money to do it…He doesnt even own the speed shop…

I refuse to watch the Discovery Channel. Their shows insults the viewer’s intelligence. I would rather watch midget wrestling or the grass growing.

Couldn’t agree more. Look, I personally like the show American Chopper. Not afraid to admit it and I take it for what it’s worth. A show that chronicles the Teutul (dysfunctional) family and all their quirks. Whether real or partially staged for TV ratings.

However, I too feel that the ‘competition’ shows should be just. A competition in the true sense of the word and keep the drama to the TV show. I really do miss the old Biker Build Off’s they had on years ago. Have a bunch recorded and will watch a few now and again to see the trials and tribulations of trying to craft a truly unique machine.

I know the whole motorcycle mania of the late 90′s and early 00′s has died off except for the die hard biker enthusiasts but would still like to see a few of these build off’s every once in a while. Bring back some of the builders of the past shows (who are still around) as well as some of the new kids on the block.

I agree, the show has lost all credibility. In my mind the last real build-off was the one between Billy Lane and Indian Larry (RIP). Say what you will, but they both built real choppers and worked out the problems along the way like the rest of us do. Even to the point of Larry helping Billy get his bike running. If you can’t bring back real bikers to the show, “Real Housewives” is closer to reality.

amen

your on the mark

Paul Jr. ,, Billing Billing
Sr. Tech Tech ,, or was that tch tch??
Jessie,,, WTF.
Gas Monkey ,, Smile an show the bugs in the teeth.

I agree with most of what you said, The Gas Monkey guys could have used a bit more of an old school paint job and I think they could have won. Also if Jesse doesnt care what anyone think, then why do the thing at all? Money? Still a form of selling out to me….

i totally agree with you about seniors bike… if he could have rode it to Vegas, or at least part of the way he would have won..

This pretty much hits the nail on the head “To me this show turned into a microcosm of our society, a society where functionality and hard work are far from important. A society where what you look like is more important than the skills you bring to the table. ”

Who cares about all their side show and stupid tricks no design or creativity was presented – Nothing learned. Just another stupid Discovery Show.

well what killed it for Jesse was Jesse not discovery!!
he tried so hard to talk crap about gmg that he ended up talking crap about all of us (people like me who can only afford to fix up the bike we have) instead of pumping up Jesse you… J&P should have watched the show… you would have heard what he said about your customers.. he is not buying parts from you “we” are..
instead of pandering to “hard core chopper guys” who don’t even buy parts from you. they “blacksmith” there own..

im not a blacksmith nor can i afford 150grand bikes i love j&p ass when i need parts the have ones i need at a good price

This show was a joke. The only “real” bike was the one that the guys actually rode to the show. The other bikes didn’t look comfortable at all. Theme bikes are just that, themes. These are for mega companies to advertise with, not the more common real rider.

The MC didn’t know crap about the bikes or the builders. He called Paul Jr., Jesse. Who ever put this show together obviously does not ride or know anything about the lifestyle. They need to stay at home and watch SoA on TV.

Let real people that ride and live the life do the show.

I wasn’t sure which comment to hijack but yours seemed to sum up portions of the themes issue, boring, predictive no imagination and like a soap Opera, PSR and PJR have totally sold out and who gives a shit about Mikey, we all know a Mikey that we all love but does this justify the cable fee. I have bought apparel for PJR designs and the box arrived ripped shirt was trashed and the google I saw on alibaba in china for $1.25′ the liners fell off with the first sweaty ride, Not impressed at all discovery need to drop both of them and move on from cobwebs and a welder that can’t talk with a break between words.

the chrome Cafe racer type bike did it for me, theme bikes what a joke when Taco Bell want a chopper.

Should have been like Lance Armstrong and quit while they were ahead, now they just suck, greed and ego filed by discovery , hey let’s bust up another door.
Retards

Just now figured this out? I gave up on all of these shows years ago. They are Soap Operas, but instead of being set in a hospital, they are set in a garage.

Jessie James is the closest thing to a real bike builder of all the guys on these shows, but because he tends to not care about schedules and deadlines, he appears to the audience to be a train wreck. At least he is a certified welder. Is Sr.? Is Jr.? Are any of these guys?

Now I am FAR from a custom builder, but when these shows where first on the air, I was hoping to learn from these guys. All I learned is how to complain, and I already know how to do that…

Are you inferring you’re a whiney welder lol as a pipeliner Iknow about them to

10-4

Yah, Paul Jr’s bike looked like a bicycle with a “Varoom” engine it it if anybody remembers what those were. Paul Sr. and Jesse James should have wone just on the technical genious of the designs and Gas Monkey’s bike is A true American Chopper well done.
Dave in Rhode Island

Most likely the only reason they had the build off show in the first place was to boost ratings for american chopper.. that obivously didnt work out right for them now they have it again most likely to boost rating for another one of their shows since they are canceling american chopper.. cause it so worked the first time…lol.. who realy knows if they counted peoples vots I dont know… I know jessie is good at what he dose seen that for other shows I have seen him on he dose seem like a nit of an a** but , when someone knows they are good at what they do and dont need someone to tell them they are usualy an a** or seem somewhat conciteded… I know he did seem frustrated on the show looked to me like he didn’t want to do it, maybe they have him under contract…..but thats just my thoughts..
