Biker Build Off – Again

Editor’s Note: The following does not represent the views of J&P Cycles or its employees.

Just about this same time last year we were playing this same record. We watched as Paul Jr. was triumphant over his old man, Paul Sr. (OCC) and Jesse James. I wrote about this travesty and stirred up quite a bit of dust. Now on the heels of Senior and Junior’s long-running American Chopper show being canceled, they are back at it again. This time it’s a four way affair with the addition of the Gas Monkey Garage guys. It all goes down Dec. 10 and 11. We’ll see if America recognizes some actual skill sets, hard work and talent this time around…or if they vote for a “cake decorator” who rolls out an unridable theme bike that looks like a helicopter, farm machinery or lamp shade that they try to pull off as “art” or “design.” How about this time all the builders just build actual motorcycles you can ride? Not a theme of something or a snowmobile…just a bike.

Predictions

OCC: I think they regret not building a bike last time and will have a strong entry this time. Expect a Shovelhead or Panhead, something that goes back to Senior’s roots. I’m thinking they will bring their “A” game.

Gas Monkey Garage: They are definitely the wild card here. I think they lack a bit on the fabrication skills (and bank accounts) of the other three, but will put forth a working man’s effort and probably roll out a low budget chopper of some sort. I’m interested to see their bike.

Jesse James: He’s going to go off the fabrication charts again. Last time he built his frame and front end from stainless steel. And I’m sure he is going to fab up a bike from scratch and it will be dope. Don’t expect a hardtail, I’m thinking a swingarm frame possibly. He has far and away the best skill set of the bunch, but his public persona is polarizing and unfortunately this comes down to a popularity contest.

Paul Junior Designs: More of the same. It’s going to be a theme bike of some sort, most likely tailored to whoever sponsors the build. Possibly a George Foreman grill bike or a lizard-themed insurance company bike, or maybe even a http://www.lameassmotorcycle.com/ bike? He could surprise me and do a bagger with a big front wheel though….Whatever it is it will be over cooked, and generally resemble a motorcycle with lots of stuff on it.

My prediction: Unless Senior’s team hits it out of the park, Jesse wins then heads back to Austin to build hot rods. Senior’s team will come in second; Senior will retire and spend his days cruising the hills of New York state.  The Gas Monkey crew rides their new found fame to third and continues five more years of TV shows. And PJD brings up the rear, without a TV show he finds work on TLC’s Cake Boss as the head decorator.

I think the only one of the three that has any class at all and the ability to make the best bike is Paul JR

Well…you all ended up being wrong:

#1 PJD
#2 Gas Monkey

Both Jesse and Senior built sport bikes…well designed, excellently crafted and original pieces…but still sport bikes. They missed the mark.

Jesse does have the old school metal fabrications skills over all the others, but in today’s CnC environment…couldnt keep up. He had to bring in more people (he bragged that he was going to do it all himself) and was given 2 multi week extensions and he was still late in producing his bike.

PJD had the best bike IMO. Yes, it was a “theme” bike, but it was so well done, I have no complaints. I would sure ride it.

Gas Monkey friggin RODE their bike to Vegas….cudos. Regardless of their lack of resources , they did a great job taking an old bike and breathing new life into it.

Everyone talks so much crap, paul jr and his team are not even creating waves, good sportsmanship is what thats called..We would like to win they say but whoever has the best bike their hats go off to them..I like gas monkey also but there is a difference in fabricating a bike and just restoring one..Jesse james is good at what he does but he cant even make deadlines and honestly his bike this year looks goofy..Occ look at last years bike, was it a build off or a model for a video game…Better this year but their designer jason sucks, honestly

Like 2 c sr. Shave that beardtach or watever u call it,luv all Y’ALL, I think It’ll be a damn good build off.
BUT I wouldn’t underestimate paul,jr {hope bunches of this goes to a good charity} for the Little childrens

FOR CHRISTMAS

Luv all u guys {not much 4 da loudmouth#$¥>%+>€*} but I wouldn’t underestimate JR.he’s a thinker.good luck
2 all unins p.s. like 2 c sr. Shave that wat ever it is

Kracker,from KY.

Jesse has always been the premier builder. His attitude has little to do with his abilities. I would expect him to craft a bike than anyone would want to have. Sr. may come up with an old school gem but he is short on details that distinguish his product. The others are fighting for third and fourth; I don’t expect anything remarkable there.

Jesse James is an ahole who disrespects everyone. His bikes all look alike and are not daily riders. Sr. is an old prick and OCC bikes are overpriced hard to ride POSs. Jr. makes no pretense about his bikes. If you don’t like his bikes, fine. BTW, who cares what you think?

Jr said something about building a breast cancer theme bike on the last show! Maybe he’s trying to kiss up to the ladies and get some votes! I just hope this time they judge off the bike and not popularity.. Don’t like people getting a trophy for building crap!

Way fast whitie kicks them all to the curb. He was robbed last build off , time for the real builder to win.

I’m interested to see what gas monkey does I think Aron has a lot of unseen skills. James will most likely do something out of copper or a rare expensive material that no one would ever use in real life but his skill and bikes are awesome. OCC softail classic look with a bit of new a lot of Cnc. Jr he’s gonna rivet something that’s themed based and no one would ever try ridding.

Build offs nowadays mean nothing with all their over the top glitz & glam – let Billy Lane into the competition and see what happens, even then it still wouldn’t be a build-off with the greatest ever, R.I.P Indian Larry< ride on forever brother!!!

You’re right about the quality of the bikes. I’d love to see a practical build-off but there are too many people who watch tv and like the bikes that “look cool”.

I think Jesse james is a talented builder. He builds his bikes from scratch and he doesn’t have a team of workers to do it for him. he gets an ideal in his head and runs with it. his bikes are unique and very rideable. not a theme bike.enough said. another great builder was Indian larry. I wounder how he would rate? RIP. Larry you will always be remembered. The tuttles are all about drama. so sad.

JESSI OF COURSE WILL BUILD A BAD ASS MOOOOTTTOORRRCCCYYYCCCLLLEE!!!!!!!!!! ,,,JR WILL MAKE A BETTER ATTEMPT AT A BIKE !!!SENIOR, HE WILL IN BETTER JUDGEMENT ACTUALLY BUILD A MOOOTTOOORRCYCLE TO HIS ERA (WHICH WOULD BE COOL )AND, THE GAS MONKEY GUYS WILL SURPRISE THE BIKER WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ME AND MY BOOOGERMAN LOVE BIKES,BOOGERMAN IS 8 YEARS OLD !!HE HAS A HARD TAIL PROJECT IN THE GARARGE HIM SELF.

I think you’re on target with your choices. There was a time when Jesse decorated a cake or two. A friend of mine got one of his bikes as payment for some serious workworking he did at a home in Palm Springs about six years ago. It is fuschia and lime in color…a low slug hardtail that is an ornament at best. It could have been a Jr bike easy. The last bike Jesse did was bad ass for sure. I almost expect the Gas Monkey guys to bring a Confederate / Ratrod inbred bike which if they do it right might be pretty cool.. The thing is: it’s all BS…there are a ton of great bike builders across America…but that’s TV. If they wanna have a biker build off then do it right, with a multi day, multi entry from across the USA and hold it at the 110th this coming summer in Milwaukee…
And if J&P sponsors it I want to be one of the traveling scouts to go see the bikes across the country. Just know that is could be done and I’m really in. I would love to get bikes from all over the USA and show the world we are still the kings of two wheel custom (ridable) bikes. They can’t just be wall hangers folks!
