There’s going to be this little biker event taking place in the hills of South Dakota next month. There will be a lot of motorcycle riders gathered there in a small town named Sturgis that boasts 6,442 residents when everybody’s tucked in for the night. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

Are you serious? Everybody’s heard of Sturgis. And this year marks the 71st anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally & Races, with two-wheeled fun running from July 30 to Aug. 14.

But what you might not know is that the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building takes place at this motorcycle Mecca (Aug. 6-10), and J&P Cycles is proud to again be an Official Partner of this unique event. This is where super-talented motorcycle designers from around the world show off their one-of-a-kind creations.

The World Championship of Custom Bike Building is an event of global proportions, encompassing around 32 events that take place in 20 countries. More than a million motorcycle enthusiasts attend these events each year. The program’s purpose is to showcase and promote international custom motorcycle design and engineering quality, craftsmanship and innovation; and to promote the evolution of custom motorcycling in ways that will help preserve the enjoyment of custom motorcycles for future generations.

Categories for the open entry portion of the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building include: freestyle, modified Harley, production manufacturer and performance custom. Judging is by ”peer group review,” with past and present competitors and selected industry experts voting for the bikes they think are tops in their respective class. J&P Cycles will assist in choosing the winner of the Partner Pick of Excellence Award, which recognizes one additional bike builder for going above and beyond with its entry.

Set-up day at Sturgis — which involves receiving, registration and run testing of competing bikes — is Saturday, Aug. 6, with the competition itself running from Sunday, Aug. 7, through the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Admission to the awards is free!

For those souls who can’t make it to Sturgis this year, you can catch all the action, including the awards ceremony, online at www.amdchampionship.com.
