Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day
March 17, 2011 | By: Jason Hayes
With spring almost here, the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day brings food, friends, and a few pints together to reflect Irish heritage. There are almost 37 million Americans that have Irish roots but this holiday is not only celebrated by the Irish. Anybody that likes a good time and a little green beer can partake in the party.
On this holiday, unfortunately, there is an increase in alcohol related accidents and deaths. On St. Patrick’s Day 2008, 37 percent of the drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above, according to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each year the number of sobriety checkpoints increase on roads and highways all over the country. We’ve all heard the rules that we should follow in order to party safely (choose a designated driver before leaving the house, leave you keys at home, etc., but the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division has compiled a pretty clever list called, 12 Steps to a Safe St. Patrick’s Day that are both entertaining and educational.
In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, we’re hoping everyone drinks responsibly and has a wonderful time celebrating this green holiday. From all of us at J&P Cycles, have a happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day.
