Kody Wisner began sharing his wealth of knowledge about motorcycles with J&P Cycles’ customers back in 2004.  After a short stint in the call center, Kody was moved to the Iowa showroom, where he was able to help local customers with his expertise of nearly all makes and models of motorcycles. After several years of working on the showroom floor and at cycle events, Kody became J&P’s bike builder and he’s been working his magic on our bikes ever since.

Kody also works with the folks in marketing doing videos, magazine articles and anything else that has a technical aspect to it. Kody and his fiancée, Rhonda, have a 3-year-old son named Wylde and Kody’s already training his boy to become the next Motocross superstar.

Q: What compelled you to get so involved with motorcycles?

A: It was my love for riding motorcycles, really. I figured if I could save money by working on my own bikes, then I would be able to own more than one motorcycle. That theory has worked out well so far.  I’ve got roughly 20 bikes in my collection right now, and a few of them are projects that I have yet to rebuild. I can’t pick only one style of riding that I enjoy most, so being able to have more than one bike works well for me.

Q: What did you do prior to coming to work for J&P?

A: I was a service manager/technician at a big multiline dealership that sold BMW, Ducati, KTM, Kawasaki, Triumph and several types of scooters. Before that I worked for several other motorcycle shops as a technician, parts guy, salesman, fabricator and service manager. I did restorations on vintage cars and motorcycles for a private collector. I also worked nights in the tool and die shop of a local factory for a couple of years. (Kody still owns and operates his own motorcycle shop while working at J&P Cycles. Wisner Cycles is located just up the road from J&P Cycles. Check him out at WWW.WISNERCYCLES.COM)

Q: What exactly do you do at J&P?

A: Exactly? That’s hard to pin down, because I have worked in every department at J&P except the warehouse and IT. My main job is customizing and building J&P Cycles’ show bikes. I also maintain all the display bikes. In addition, I work with the marketing department on many projects, including social media, television, and magazine projects.

Q: What do you currently ride?

A: I have several bikes I go back and forth between as my main rides. A 2008 Suzuki DL650 “VStrom,” a 1981 KZ1000 CSR with an international sidecar and several customs that I’ve built over the years. I like the KZ with the sidecar because I can take my whole family with me and go anywhere with no worries. The VStrom is the perfect everyday bike.  It gets good gas mileage, is comfortable and is as reliable as you can get. If I want to go bar hopping, I will take my Triumph 750 chopper, which was the first bike I built from the ground up around 10 years ago.

Q: What do you like most about your job with J&P Cycles?

A: Just about everything about my job is cool, so it’s hard to narrow it down. I love that I get to do different things daily — from working on bikes to writing magazine articles. Working with John Parham is awesome; the guy built this place from the dirt floor up, and is a great person to have as a mentor.

Q: What is your dream bike?

A: That’s a tough one for me, because I have a favorite in just about every style of bike.  But my all-time favorites fall between two bikes: Any Crocker V-twin or a 1923 or so Ace with a Flexi sidecar.

Q: What are you currently reading?

A: Each month I read every motorcycle magazine that I can get my hands on. I’m also big into blogs right now. There are several that I visit daily, including, www.cyrilhuzeblog.com and www.churchofchoppers.blogspot.com.
